This is a somewhat slow, silent story of a young boy growing up in a poor village in Bengal. It follows Apu and Durga, (two children who are poor even by the standards of their village mates), as they search for wild berries and leaves, steal mangoes from their neighbors, get beaten, play cowries, get lost, and discover trains. Their lives are simple and their stories simply told. You get a sense both of the rarified, natural beauty that village life holds, and of the ways in which it grinds peo.more

Originally published in 1929 (I think), a terrific story of a life of poverty in an Indian village. I wish Mitt Romney would read this book. (Not sure it would do Paul Ryan any good to read it.)

The books is wonderful, depicting bygone rural Bengal. And the Satyajit Ray film is magnificent, too.

This book started my love for Indian novels. The apu's trilogy, Aranakata Pem banda and Gora,Srikantha, Srikantha and Rajalakshmi, all books translated by Ms Sinhaarachchi were loved and read and re read until they got rabbit eared. I was just a teen, eager to get lost in a world, and forget that I was seated in a corner of the school library, unseen by anyone.

I read this to celebrate my friend’s birthday week. I haven’t read much of Bengali literature, and my friend had long since urged me to read Bibhutibhushan’s works. What an alliteration-filled name! I had desisted reading this saying that I can’t even pronounce the author’s name.
But finally, I did come around. ‘Pather Panchali’ was gifted by a friend, and it was lying there on my bookshelf. When I did start reading, I fell in love with Opu and Durga. Bandyopadhyay at once took me on a journey t.more

I wish I could read Bengali !!. This is the Indian equivalent of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. But this novel contented with children's world without much major social or political chaos. Another important thing, there is no solid story or proper handling of time. The novel is about the rural domestic Bengali village life correlating a boy's childhood with his family in a very simple language. Author's command over children's psychology is outstanding. I hope for another better English tra.more
A very touching story of the lives of ordinary Indians under excruciating poverty in the pre-independence Bengal. In a very simple, yet powerful language, the author has woven an intricate web of human emotions, expressed through the eyes of two beautiful young children. The description of the life of Bengal in those days is near flawless. It is often said that poverty cannot be explained - it has to be experienced, and this book stands tall as a testimony to it.

Always difficult to review a classic which has been feted and dissected. Merit & technicalities take a backseat. At the most one can take an opposing stance and defend why they did NOT like the book.
This book in its rural and impoverished setting is far removed from my childhood - and yet did not alienate at any stage. A huge chunk of Apu's childhood echoed within me. The emotional coherence of the story persisted inspite of (seemingly) disjointed scenes.

The best book I have read so far in my life. The raw emotion in the sentences are so powerful. The characters are etched in my mind very powerfully. I had to stop reading the book towards the end because I could not gather the emotional stability to read on, such is the power in the words. I finally finished the book after laying off for a week. Unbelievable writing! I will never forget Durga and Opu.
The book did not give me a chance to complete, the writer could have done justice in translation, but this is a book that has to be read in the original Bengali language. Its a celebration experience of small incidents occurring to a boy Opu.
i loved every details of this book. bibhutibhushan will get a nobel in heaven for this and i'll make a prize and take it with me to heaven just to give it to him, then God can throw me in hell, i won't mind that.

I loved the movie better than the book (English translation). The story was entirely lost in translation and almost made me mourn for the loss :-(
It's a slow story but a story one will come to love in the end
It is the kind of book that flows with the serenity and nobility of a big river. There is nothing irrelevant or haphazard. In that lies the secret of its excellence. So slow and smooth.

Horihor Ray, not a very well-to-do brahmin, lives in the village of Nischindipur. Indir Thakrun, an old widowed woman, who had nobody to look after her, takes shelter in the house of Horihor to whom she is distantly related. Four or five years later, the boy Opu grows up to be very inquisitive and sensitive to the beauty and mystery of nature. He and his sister Durga are always out for some new adventures like roaming through the forests, taking part in indigenous games and plucking flowers and fruits stealthily. Opu is admitted into the village school where many village elders assemble and talk on diverse subjects. Opu is taken by his father to a client's house. It is the first time that Opu gets a glimpse of the outside world which fills his mind with joy and excitement. The village festivity, the fair, and the Jatra performance, all bring variety and thrill to the monotonous flow of village life. Durga, so restless, yet so innocent, dies suddenly, plunging the whole family into grief and leaving her little brother all alone. Horihor leaves home for a long period and struggles desperately to earn a livelihood. After returning home he decides to leave Nischindipur. They pack up and go to the railway station. As the train steams in, they board the train leaving behind Nischindipur forever with its many sweet and sour memories.[5]
